"The Heron Automata"
Project type
Automated Sculpture
Date
June 2024
Location
Cardiff
"The Heron Automata" is a captivating sculpture inspired by the mechanical theatre of the cabaret and my experiences living in Llandaff. During my time there, I was enthralled by the herons, frequently photographing them to capture their elegant flight. My kayaking trips on the River Taff allowed me to study herons up close, providing valuable insights into their anatomy and wing movement.
The sculpture incorporates driftwood collected from the Taff during these kayaking excursions, embodying the river's essence. It portrays a flowing river scene, with the heron rendered in meticulous detail. The wings, each feather individually carved from driftwood, showcase my dedication to both the artistic and technical aspects of the piece.
The process of fine-tuning the automata proved challenging, but it was a profound learning experience, expanding my skills and knowledge. "The Heron Automata" was a highlight of my graduate show at the Cardiff School of Art, reflecting both my passion for the natural world and my commitment to craftsmanship.
